- www.smartvet.co.za South Africa’s first and best internet based CPD learning site - online CPD points
- www.sava.co.za South African Veterinary Association: the website has some useful information for members
- www.bsava.com British Small Animal Veterinary Association: has very good publications and books full of good illustrations, practically oriented and up to date. Worth having in any small animal practice.
- www.vnasa.co.za Veterinary Nurses of South Africa: Good general info website for Vet Nurses and those wishing to become a Vet Nurse
- University of Pretoria Onderstepoort Website: Contact numbers of the staff and some interesting info.
- www.lostdogs.co.za Lost dog website. We suggest taking photos before sending off to the SPCA. Also has a list of all Practices in an area and some animal centres
- http://www.brabysmaps.co.za/ananzi/default.asp: The best maps we have found for directions in South Africa, great for giving directions to your clients. For busy practices it would not be a bad idea to register and get your location registered.
- http://www.facebook.com: If you haven’t already started, use this networking facility, everyone else is on it. It is great to get in contact with old friends, but beware there is the addiction factor, it is becoming the most used service on the internet.
- Additional bonus Nomadvets has now got its own page on Facebook!!!!
CPD LINKS
These are Links to sites which are helpful in reading up on cases and getting more info on latest techniques and diagnostics.
- Smartvet: An excellent SOUTH AFRICAN site sponsored by Royal Canin. The site has online courses and articles from South African specialists. The biggest drawing card is the ONLINE CPD POINTS. It is free to join but you must must pay per course.
- Cornell University Veterinary Consultant: An online program that comes up with a list of differentials for diseases from clinical signs and symptoms that you put in. Not much information but very good if you have a lot of abnormal clinical signs and want a list of dd’s to rule out. The only problem is you have to spell like an American e.g. Diarrhea, Esophagus, Hematurea etc
- Merck Veterinary Manual Online- free version of Merck manual seems to be 2006 version so up to date. You can see all the relevant sections. Crosses all domestic species not in great detail for Small Animals but a good quick reference manual. Sponsored by Merial
- Exotic Pet.Net - More than what most of us need to know but when confronted by a budgie or iguana this is where we would go for help. The layout is a bit hard on the eyes but it is wealth of information. It has a hang of a lot of information from anatomy to diseases and husbandry again excellent site.
- Veterinary Cancer Registry- Very cumbersome to get good results, but if you ever have a Myxofibrosarcoma or something equally obscure on histopath and want to chat to someone whom has seen and treated one, you can contact the vet that saw that confirmed case. Good also for getting a veterinary database into various neoplasias and will help with future research so if you have good neoplasia cases upload them.
- PetEducation.com- if a client is going to look on the Internet you want it to be reliable and not sensational, scientific but not over the top. This site for-fulls these requirements for us. It explains anal glands and how to give a cat pills. This is one site though if you are going to recommend check it out for yourself first to see if you agree. Again american so pounds not kilograms
- IVIS- This site has it all! Which unfortunately is probably its downfall, it is very hard to read. It has links to everything imaginable Veterinary CPDwise but the site is overwhelming. If you are looking for something specific a good site to fine it. It has good free books and article. It is free but you have to register.
- Vetcpd: Online site from the SAVA which you can log CPD points. Also gives you info on how you can do it by sms. Great stuff for vets located abroad and for Vets in South Africa to log the mandatory points.
